The Boathouse is the private working studio and hotshop of artist Dale Chihuly. Acquired in 1989, The Boathouse is representative of Chihuly’s artistic and design aesthetic, showcasing work from the artist’s iconic series, as well as his personal collections of art and unique objects.
The Hotshop is one of the largest in the world and is the primary space where Chihuly and his team of glassblowers create works in glass for exhibitions and installations around the world.
Located on the shores of Lake Union in Seattle, Washington, The Boathouse offers sweeping views of the city skyline and a singular behind-the-scenes look at the life and work of Dale Chihuly.

Dale Chihuly is considered one of the most innovative and iconic figures in contemporary art. For over fifty years, he has worked with glass as an artistic medium to increasing critical and popular acclaim, and his solo exhibition venues have included the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the de Young Museum, San Francisco; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Chihuly’s work is included in the permanent collections of more than 200 museums worldwide.
ACCESSIBILITY NOTES
The Hotshop is on the lower level of the building and is wheelchair/walker accessible. There are eight stairs from the Hotshop to the Boathouse on the upper level, or there is a separate, accessible entrance to the building that leads directly to the Boathouse level.
